Programme overview

We’ll introduce you to Transport for London (TfL) and the important role it plays in becoming a strong, green heartbeat for London, delivering the Mayor's Transport Strategy and a safe and sustainable transport system, jobs and homes for London. The aim? To create a city for all Londoners and make London's diverse communities greener, healthier and more attractive places to live, work, play and do business.

What's included

This virtual work experience programme is bursting with engaging content designed to introduce you to the various services and sustainable initiatives at TfL, plus pathways into an early career with the organisation. You’ll also complete a series of quizzes and real-world activities to help build your understanding and set you up for the Innovate TfL competition.

Introduction to Transport for London

Discover Transport for London, its role and impact on the city. You’ll learn what kind of organisation TfL is, where it operates, and how it has evolved over time. The module covers TfL’s wide range of services, its core values and commitment to diversity and inclusion, and its sustainability initiatives, including efforts to improve air quality and deliver the Mayor’s Transport Strategy. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of TfL’s operations, values and career pathways.

Technology and Data

You will explore the role of technology and data at TfL. Data is not just used as part of a data career but also forms a part of many of TfL’s business areas and roles. Additionally, you’ll learn about the essential skills needed for a successful career in this field. You’ll also learn that technology at TfL depends on the vast quantities of data it collects and the processes it uses to help deliver services and inform customers.

Engineering

Get a taste of engineering at TfL and how different engineering teams work together to keep the city moving. You’ll gain insight into key engineering careers at TfL and how they contribute to major projects in the city, such as the Elizabeth line. Additionally, you’ll learn about the essential technical and core skills needed for success in this field. You’ll understand how engineering supports TfL’s operations and its mission to become a strong, green heartbeat for London.

Business

We’ll introduce you to the business side of TfL, highlighting the different teams that keep the organisation running smoothly. You might be surprised to learn that TfL has a property company called Places for London. You’ll learn about this business area and discover the essential skills needed to succeed, from collaboration to problem solving.

Innovation

Discover Innovate TfL, an annual competition for young people that involves developing an innovative solution to a real TfL challenge. The aim is to inspire you to build your confidence and skills. You’ll hone your communication, project and time management, analytical, research, creative, numeracy and literacy skills. You could win an in-person work experience opportunity with TfL by entering your submission.

Employability Skills

Whether you think a career at TfL is or isn't for you, this Virtual Work Experience provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills to help you in your next career steps. You’ll dive into teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. After a whistle-stop tour through employability skills, you’ll complete a self-evaluation activity to reflect on your strengths and further skills to develop.

When will I hear back if I have been successful with my application?

Once you have applied for your programme, you will receive a confirmation email. You will be notified about the outcome of your application via email at least 3 days before the programme start date. Good luck!

Can I apply to multiple programmes?

Yes, you can sign up to multiple programmes with us.

Who can take part in the programme?

Most of our programmes require students to be in school/college. Some programmes require students to be based in specific regions of the UK, this is stipulated by the organisations themselves, and is not defined by Springpod.

The age ranges are just a guide — we welcome applicants of all ages and backgrounds, whether you're starting fresh or switching paths.

Will I receive a certificate on completion of the programme?

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.
